Scary Dreams

topic posted Mon, March 24, 2008 - 3:24 AM by  Adriana
I often have scary lucid dreams involving a dark shadow crowding over me, which I feel is some kind of evil demon, who has the power to suffocate me without touching me. In the dream I am usually to scared to scream before it takes away my breathing. I can see my lover sleeping next to me, but I can't get his help. I used to have similar dreams when I was really young, but they usually involved a demon with a more detailed face. I know that the demon part I can blame on the fact that my parents raised my in a religion, but ever since I left home I found my own path and no longer believe in religion. I am looking for advice on how to stop this dream, or maybe help me wake up from it. It is often a problem for me to wake up from these dreams once the shadow starts suffocating me. Thanks!

Apparently these are not lucid dreams...
Are you aware that you're dreaming? Why can't you wake up - because you're on autopilot or because you don't know how to?
If the latter is the case, try and break out of the body paralysis by moving your limbs.

Yes I do know that I am dreaming and it feels just like a pleasant lucid dream. They only difference is that I can not wake up from these dreams like I can from others. The body paralysis is something I've overcome with time, but since I am being held by this shadows power I can not leave. Meaning I can actually move my arms and grab at my neck, many times I am awakened by someone who is awake who can see that I am in distress. I've also had many episodes where I think I've woken, but there it is again, and again, and again.

Having dreams about suffocation, or paralysis, with an inability to wake up can sometimes be a symptom of certain medical conditions. People who suffer from Sleep Apnea, (Stop breathing while asleep.) often report having such dreams. If I were you I might start looking into Sleep Apnea and related conditions. It's possible that you could require medical treatment, lifestyle change, holistic treatment, ect.

Well I don't think I have any of those medical conditions. I have a pretty healthy lifestyle. I exercise regularly and eat pretty well. Sleep Apnea doesn't seem like the problem because usually I am breathing very heavily during these dreams for a long time before someone wakes me up. Thanks for responding anyway. :) I feel like the problem is more in my thoughts about these shadows.

while sleep paralysis and sleep apnea do have some overlapping symptoms, this sounds most likely like paralysis or what Jorge Conesa Sevilla calls "bounded lucidity." certainly do read up on apnea, but also take comfort in knowing that most sleep paralysis can be transformed by a change in attitude. sometimes it's a matter of calling on your faith (however it works for you - guardian spirits, helpful ancestor, god, etc). these nightmarish scenerios can open up into some powerful experiences if you're willing to take the challenge.

It sounds like sleep paralysis . . .

I believe this is the step right before an out of body experience . . . show fear and you are paralyzed by a scary monster . . . let go of fear and release and you'll be in a lucid or astral experience, flying dreams, total control, and lead by otherworld guides . . . the key is knowing you are awake, but your body isn't . . .

Thank you so much, that was a good link. I'll take your advice next time it happens. I love flying dreams. Other world guides are great too, I've had a dream where my guide was myself and I could be either person. The mind is a wonderful thing.

"I've had a dream where my guide was myself and I could be either person", this duality is good . . . I see this not as the mind, but as your inner guide, Holy Guardian Angel, true self, soul (whatever) attempting to get a message to you . . .

Once we stop wanting to run or move away from what what scares us it transforms into something beautiful usually and one stops having those dreams...it can also show where we are feeling stuck in areas of our lives that sometimes we cannot see consciously...

I used to have the same experiences on and off since a child--the feeling of a shadow over me, the panic, the paralysis and inability to wake up or thinking I did and then realizing I wasn't again.
The fear was what made it worse. I started reminding myself before I went to sleep every night that if that happened, I would know that I was safe and would eventually wake up--and after several nights, when I had that same experience, I did remember that I was safe--and then I just easily awakened. After continuing to practice that, the experiences decreased in frequency significantly.
I think that it is actually the early stage of moving out of body but the fear makes it into something really scary.

Yes, the fear is the hard part to get over. I realize that I am in a dream when these happen, but I am unable to leave at will. Perhaps on an even deeper level, I am the one not letting me leave so that I can face my fear. I know that eventually these dreams will have some kind of climax and that something enlightening will come from them. Maybe it will be the last little thread that still ties me down to fear brought on by religion.

I have had a similar dream. You may need a energy clearing. I can help with that If you would like. Also do not eat at least 3 hours before sleep.
Anytime I eat before bed I have nightmares.

i have these too. i usually just end up taking a deep breath, then breaking the paralysis with a sudden burst of will. sometimes i just breathe and attempt to coexist with it, although i never feel like i'm really accepting it when i do that, just trying to show that i do.. i wish i could explore and become more familiar with those kind of experiences without cowering to that overwhelming since of intrusion. i used to think they were demons too, because of sounds, but as i become more alert to changing from what state to the other, i saw that they were normal sounds already happening inside my house. just my sensitivity increased, then my imagination made them match my feelings. i feel a lot better now that i understand that.

Ok I jut woke up and I had another fucking scary ass dream. This time it was different. It started out as a lucid dream and then turned into an autopilot. When I fell asleep I was on my computer laying down in bed. I realized I was dreaming when my computer screen turned to tribe on it's own. It took me to my profile and I decided to update my location, after I had done that I realized there was a picture on my profile that I had not posted. The picture was animated and kept replaying over and over again. The picture was of a woman who is outside in the woods and is boiling water over a fire pit, then she tosses the water in various directions and you can hear dogs yelping, meanwhile the camera is following the dogs as they run. I then felt a realization that this was somehow my friends family. I jumped into the picture and began speaking to the woman about my friend and I said "yeah her whole family is the wandering type, they spend 3 months here and then there all year," this didn't make sense because at first I thought this was her family, but then realized it wasn't. I should have left then, but I didn't. I stayed while she cooked food. I also knew that this was a dream because we were on a platform of some type that looked like the woods but at a certain point it ended and you could fall off, there was only darkness. Somehow my husband appeared and he was sitting at the bench next to me. He started telling the woman that we were going to have a baby and it made me upset because I didn't want him to tell people. well then this really beautiful pink classic car drove on to the pad. Inside the car was a very large man and when he got out he needed one of those scooter things to get around. He drove up to the table in the scooter and then stood up and sat at the table. I thought it was very odd that he his underwear were visible from the top of his pants and he was wearing a jock strap on top of his pants. Then I looked over at the lady and she was also wearing the same getup. Everyone ate the food, but I didn't want to. After she had emptied the pan, I decided to put water in the pan and I put it over the fire pit to boil. I hadn't seen any dogs so I wanted to try an experiment. When the water had boiled I threw the water and I heard dogs yelping, but the sound was coming from inside the wall next to the cupboard. So I boiled water again and tried putting the water near where the sound was coming, thinking it would attract them. Then one of those flash things happened in my dream, where something changes. All of the people were gone and I was laying in a huge bed next to the wall were I had heard the yelping. I noticed the fat man was also in the bed, but I could not see him I could only talk to him. I was telling him that I could see defects in the drywall. then some of the drywall started crumbling off and I could hear the dogs. I screamed to the lady that the dogs were trying to get out, but she was no where. Then my friends voice who wasn't there said, those aren't dogs. I started to panic and I was trying to hold the wall from crumbling. It was useless and I knew something evil was going to come out. Once the wall had crumbled all of the plaster off and there was only the cardboard looking stuff, the nails of the demon scratched through where my hand was trying to hold the wall. He scratched me and I was trying not to be scared and I wouldn't look away, but then he started talking in crazy demon language and the wind started blowing and the pad began to get smaller. It was forcing me to get closer to him. Te rest of the wall ripped of and I got to see all of him. At this point even though I was trying to scream, nothing would come out of my mouth, so I decided to make my body in the real world make a noise so that it would wake me up. It worked. So this time, no shadow, it had a face and I was able to wake up. I don't know if this is an improvement considering I lost control of the dream at some point.

Oh I forgot to add that when the demon had a hold of my arm he said "accept Jesus Christ as your saviour." Creepy huh?

I had a similar evil shadow type creature harass me in my dreams when I was younger. I knew everytime that the beast was comming to run me down because all people in my dreams dissapear and I was alone. The beast would always run me down and end my dreams. I had that slow running type deal where I could not escape it's grasp. However, one night while running from the beast I found myself at the top of some stairs and just as the beast was going to get me I jumped and grabbed a lip on the wall and hung there as the shadow went under my feat. I remember it looking back at me and this was the first time I had actualy seen it's face. It looked defeated and broken as though all it's power had diminished, since then I have not encountered the creature in my dreams. I think facing your beast will allow you to have power over it. Seemed to help me anyways, good luck.

Yeah, very crazy dream. You had mentioned before that I needed an energy clearing, how do you do that? It sounds interesting.

There are many ways, and it is recommended that people do it every so often, depending on lifestyle, etc. My guides recommend for me to do it daily, although I am not usually that diligent. all I need is your permission and we can agree on a time and I can tune in to you and see if I can see anything in your field that is not serving your highest good and clear it out. It only takes 5-10 min or so. Let me know. ;)

My earliest specific memory is of lying on my back on the floor in front of our front door, way up impossibly high over my little kid body, and discovering that if I closed my eyes, I could see a monster there, and if I opened them, it would go away. I guess that was a little like waking up ... and closing my eyes I knew the monster wasn't real but that I could make it come and go as I pleased... I guess that was a little like lucid dreaming ...

Another recurring dream from my early childhood: I'm sitting on the couch with my mom reading a book to me. She says she's cold and asks me to go close the back door. I go back there where my mom can't see me, and it never fails, the monster comes out and grabs me -- but it's okay, I wake up, and I'm actually there on the couch with my mom reading a book to me. She says she's cold and asks me to go close the back door ...

this happens many times, I can't wake up for real, just always back on that some couch, reading that same book.
